Jack came to Oakdale while working on James Stenbeck's case. He dropped into the Snyder farm for a visit. He decided that he would stay in Oakdale and he got a job on the police department. He stayed with his aunt, Emma for a while. His cousin, Holden needed Jack to go with him to Montana. There he ran into Carly Tenney. She was young, wild, and the exact opposite of Jack. They did not get along at all. Carly worked closely with Jack to bring down a dirty cop. After being stranded together, they realized they had feelings for each other. Jack let his guard down and fell in love with Carly. Unfortunately, Carly had a deal with her sister, and she wanted Hal Munson to marry her so that they could have a child and she could collect some money. Jack accepted Carly’s choice and let her go. The deal blew up on Carly when Rosanna refused to give her the money she owed her.
Jack moved on and started dating Julia Lindsey, after helping her with an angry boyfriend. Jack and Julia were falling in love with each other, but Jack’s feelings for Carly started to interfere with his relationship with Julia. Carly continued to make poor choices in her life and that frustrated Jack. After Carly had lost everything, Jack felt sorry for her and started having feelings for her again. He confessed his feelings to Julia and told her that it wouldn’t be fair to her if he stayed. Jack and Carly finally made it together, but not without a fight from Julia. With Julia trying to kill Carly, Carly thought that it would be best if she broke it off with Jack. Julia finally got out of their lives and Carly and Jack got back together. Julia showed up a couple of years later with a baby, Jack Jr. It turned out that she had stolen the baby. Jack had just started accepting the baby and learning how to be a daddy to his own son.
On one occasion, Carly was kidnapped and taken to another country. Jack fought to find her and get her back. She was given a serum that would age her quickly, so by the time she was rescued she had aged quite a bit. But that didn’t stop Jack, who held a reluctant Carly in his arms, caring for what was inside more than out. Carly wasn’t so embarrassed and let Jack love her. Eventually, Carly was given a reverse serum that brought her looks back to where they were when she left. Jack treated her no different, and she felt safe and secure in his arms.
The night before Jack and Carly were going to get married, they had a huge argument over her relationship with Craig Montgomery. Jack didn’t approve of them spending so much time together. Carly was angry when she left, and went to her office and started drinking to calm herself. Mike Kasnoff showed up while Carly was drinking. As they sat there and talked, Carly found comfort in Mike's arms. They made love. The next day, Jack and Carly made up but she never told him about the affair - until she had to. Carly found herself pregnant, but she wasn’t sure if it was Mike’s baby or Jack’s. She went to Montana to get away. Jack followed her, just in time to help with the birth. Carly had a little girl who she named Sage. They renewed their vows and found out later that Sage was Jack’s.
Carly’s cousin Molly Conlan was in town. She had a mobster chasing her. When he was caught at Jack and Carly’s house, Jack came to arrest him. He called for back up, but Molly was so upset at his presence that she insisted that Jack take him out of the house. Jack decided to take him in his car. Carly begged him not to, but he couldn’t bear to see Molly upset. On the way to the police department, Jack’s car went over the bridge. Jack’s body was not in the car. Everyone gave up on the search eventually, but not Carly. She searched until she found Jack. He had amnesia and was married to a woman who was the nurse who took care of him in the hospital. Julia had a son named JJ and they were one big happy family. Carly got Jack to come back to Oakdale, and once he was there, she had him court ordered to live with her instead of Julia. Jack was torn. He finally got his memory back and let Julia down easy. She sought comfort in his cousin, Holden. Carly and Jack were glad to have things back to normal. Tragically, Julia was killed by her ex-husband and JJ was awarded to Jack, since he was the only "real dad" he knew.
Jack and Carly finally divorced in 2006, and after grieving for a while, Carly found herself falling in love with Simon Frasier. The two got into trouble and Jack had to arrest them both. After a struggle, Simon and Carly got away, and Jack took the kids to the farm to stay.
Jack and Katie began dating and he quickly fell for the bubbly blonde. Carly returned to town, putting a wrench in the works and then JJ was kidnapped. Together, Jack and Carly tracked down JJ and brought him home; along the way, Jack began having feelings for Carly again. Nearly unconscious after an explosion, he said, "I love you, Carly," within Katie's hearing (Carly wasn't there). When they returned to Oakdale, Jack decided to put the past behind him and proposed to Katie! Katie accepted and Jack rushed the wedding forward and they were married in a few days.
Just after the wedding, Jack got devastating news: Carly was dying from a brain lesion! He put his life - and his honeymoon - on hold to care for her! Jack was falling for Carly again and asked her to marry him. On the day of their wedding, Carly told him that she was misdiagnosed and had lied about it. He left her at the altar but it was too late to save his relationship with Katie.
He took the kids from Carly and tried to leave her in his past. Janet Ciccone arrived in town and began an affair with Jack. The closer they got, though, the more Jack realized his feelings for Carly weren't in the past. Around this time he learned of Carly's affair with Holden and was livid. Rather than focus on Carly, though, Jack tried to save Parker from a bad relationship with Liberty Ciccone - and a livid Brad! When Brad accused Parker of raping Liberty, Jack and Carly pulled together to clear their son. At Alison and Aaron's wedding, Jack and Carly talked about the past but neither could admit they still had feelings for one another. Janet realized that Jack's feelings weren't in the past and moved out of the farm.

At Carly's, Jack learns that JJ has been accepted to a boarding school. Carly is ecstatic but Jack doesn't like the idea of their son being away for months at a time. He is also worried about the cost but Carly says the school offered a partial scholarship and they only owe $10,000. Jack says he doesn't have that kind of money; Carly says they can pay half now and half later. She convinces him that this is the best thing for JJ because of their issues. Jack agrees to pay the $5,000 but that empties his bank account. Sage returns from a friend's house and Carly goes to the kitchen. Jack talks to Sage about the upcoming wedding and asks if she would be a flower girl for them! Sage is pleased that she's been forgiven and says she'll do it! She says Carly has to approve, too, and she does. Jack leaves. Carly suggests ice cream sundaes.
Janet and Liberty are shopping for the wedding dress. A clerk suggests a matronly suit but Liberty finds the perfect dress. Janet is afraid it is too expensive but Libs convinces her to try it on. She tries on the dress and loves it but worries that the dress isn't the right thing for a 30-something woman. Liberty convinces her the dress is perfect. Jack arrives and Liberty tells him about the dress. He loves the idea of a big wedding and thinks it is perfect. He convinces Janet to let him buy the dress. Liberty says the maid of honor dress is the next priority as Jack pays for the dress – which costs $5,000! He is stunned. Janet hugs him again and thanks him for the dress.
Jack, Janet and Liberty arrive at Al's soon after Carly and Sage. Janet thanks Sage for agreeing to be a flower girl and Carly offers to make any dresses they might need. Janet says she and Liberty found some great dresses at Fashions and invites Sage to come and pick another out. Sage is excited and goes with Janet and Liberty to check out the dresses. Jack sits down with Carly and asks her not to cash the check for JJ – because it will bounce! Carly is shocked and asks what happened. Jack says Janet's wedding dress took all of his available cash. Carly can't believe he did that but Jack says this is her fault for thinking he is an ATM! Carly says the kids have to come first but Jack defends Janet's wedding needs. He says he'll have the cash in a week but Carly says they have to have the money to the school in two days! She says Janet can pick a different dress. Janet returns and asks what is going on. Jack says they were talking about the kids' schedule. Janet says Sage found the perfect dress but it is the last one and she has to buy it now. He leaves to see the dress and Carly tells Janet she is selfish! She says Jack is just a policeman, with three kids and a small salary. She angrily tells Janet that Jack used JJ's tuition money to buy her dress; Janet is shocked and says she didn't know. She says she didn't ask Jack to buy the dress but Carly doesn't believe her. Janet tells Carly to back off because she isn't after Jack's money!
At Fashions, Jack looks at Sage's dress and loves it. He asks her if she can put the dress on hold until his next paycheck. She agrees.
Jack returns to Al's and Janet tells him he didn't have to buy the dress. Carly angrily brings up JJ's tuition again and shocks Janet with the news that JJ is headed to boarding school. Jack says how he spends his money is none of Carly's concern and leads Janet out.
At the farm, Jack says Carly is just jealous and lashing out; Janet says she would never take anything from his kids. He says he knows that and wants to give her what she wants. Janet says the fantasy wedding isn't what she wants because the kids have to come first. She says all she needs is his love but Jack insists on giving her the perfect wedding.
Jack stops by Carly's to pick up Sage for the day. She tries to convince him to let Sage stay with her but Jack says Sage has to get used to his life with Janet. He says letting Sage skip the family dinner would send the wrong message. Carly calls Sage down, tells her to have a good time and sends them both away.
At the farm, Emma and Janet get on one another's nerves as they both try to cook Thanksgiving dinner their way. Luke arrives; so do Jack and Sage. Jack tries to get Sage to apologize but Janet takes it easy on the kiddo and sends her inside. Luke comes out and takes Jack's bag; Jack and Janet go inside. Luke reaches into the bag and takes out a beer! Emma and Janet get back to their cooking duties; Jack kisses Janet, upsetting Sage. Holden returns and asks Jack to open a few cans. Meg asks Sage to watch over Ethan for a bit. Luke comes back inside, drinking alcohol from a coffee mug. Lily arrives with Lucinda and the girls, Brian comes in, too. Luke kisses Lucinda but gives Brian the cold shoulder. Emma jokes that Brian is too old for Lucinda as Luke walks out. Holden tells Lily about inviting Noah but says he doesn't think Noah will show up. On the porch, Luke pours another drink. Noah arrives! "Surprise," Luke drawls. Noah mentions seeing Holden at Java, which upsets Luke. Faith comes outside and hugs Noah. She takes Noah inside. Brian asks if he can help and Lucinda gives him some cans to open, too. He gets the canned squash open on the first try and Luke obnoxiously asks if he's a real man now! Lucinda tells Luke to back off and Luke leaves the kitchen. Holden says Aaron is in Seattle for the holiday. Natalie mentions that Sage won't play with any of them, which worries Janet. She leaves. Abigail calls to talk to Holden; Emma asks Meg to fetch the Elderberry wine from the porch. Paul arrives with a rose for her and apologizes for being late. He blames business. Lily and Jack meet on the porch; he is worried that Janet may have gone to Carly's.
Back at the farm, Holden asks Noah to give Luke some time. Emma asks the men to go after the Hubbard Squash. Brian asks about the squash and Lucinda tells him about the traditional hacking of the squash. Meg and Paul come in as Janet returns with Carly. Emma welcomes her. Jack says the boys and Libs are eating with Brad and Katie at Tom and Margo's. Sage is thrilled to see Carly. Holden and the boys arrive with the squash and saw it apart. Brian and Jack take turns sawing it and then Paul does a round of sawing. Luke makes more 'real man' comments to Brian until Noah pulls him away. Jack thanks Janet for bringing Carly because it made Sage so happy. The family sits down to dinner. Emma tells the family she is grateful they are all there. Jack and Janet hold hands, so do Lily and Holden. Meg and Paul talk about their baby and announce they are having a girl. Paul says they are going to name the baby Eliza; Emma starts to cry. Luke rolls his eyes when Emma welcomes Brian. Holden asks about wedding plans and Janet announces they are getting married on New Year's Eve! The family joins hands as Emma prays over the meal and Jack offers a toast to Emma. After the meal, Lily and Carly clean up. Carly mentions that New Year's Eve is Parker's birthday; she is upset that the day isn't just about him any longer. Sage listens as Lily says it is time to move forward. Sage goes to the porch where Jack and Janet are sitting alone. She asks if Janet really invited Carly; she says she did and Sage thanks her. She apologizes for all the bad things she has done and Janet forgives her. Jack hugs her; Carly watches from the kitchen. As Noah is leaving, Luke thanks him for coming by. Noah asks what is going on with Brian; Luke says he should ask Brian. Brian comes outside and says he and Lucinda are leaving. Noah leaves. Brian brings up Luke's drinking but Luke won't talk to him; Brian tells him to get breath mints before his family finds out. Luke says Brian better keep his secret or he'll be sorry! He returns inside.
Janet and Jack drive Carly and Sage back home, talking about Thanksgiving dinner. Sage hugs Jack and goes inside. Jack and Janet leave.
