It's All About Family, Remember?

Thursday, August 07 2008
Annie uses Ryan's guilt against him, Zach tells Kendall not to be so obvious, Aidan and Greenlee meet newlyweds in Las Vegas, Fletcher threatens Frankie and Amanda offers Randi a job!

On the plane, Kendall, Annie, Ryan and Zach make small talk. Annie begins feeling airsick and runs for the bathroom. Ryan asks Kendall what is really going on. She tries to convince him that they are just trying to bond with Annie but he doesn't believe her - especially when she brings up the hidden key. Ryan tells her to back off and goes after Annie. Zach says Kendall could use classes in sensitivity and tells her to back off, too. He says if she keeps pushing they will never learn the truth. She agrees to back off. At the bathroom, Annie hears Richie's voice tell her that she will never by okay until Greenlee is out of the way. She leaves the restroom and tells Ryan she just wants things to get back to normal. She reminds him that in the hospital he said family comes first. Kendall comes over and asks how Annie is doing. She says she is fine and apologizes for acting so strangely. She says she wants things to get back to normal. Kendall says she'll try and hugs Annie. She asks about the accident and keeps questioning her when Annie says she doesn't remember. Ryan hears their raised voices and asks what is going on. Kendall says they were talking about moving on and sits down with Zach to play cards. A while later, Annie returns to Ryan and asks what he is thinking about. "The woman I love," he says.

In Vegas, Aidan and Greenlee play a few games and then people watch. Aidan points out a man having an affair with another woman. Greenlee sees an older couple who are obviously deeply in love. She sends them champagne. The couple joins them at the bar and they chat for a bit. The couple tells Greenlee that they are in Vegas to get married after years of knowing one another. They advise Greens and Aidan to follow their hearts so they don't miss out on time together. They ask how Aidan and Greens got together. They tell them a little bit about the strange happenings. The couple advises them to get married already! The four of them head for the Black Jack tables. Greenlee asks Foster what really happened with them 40 years before. He says they weren't mature enough to appreciate the good thing they had going. Aidan and Babs, across the room, cash out. She tells him not to be afraid to sweep Greens off her feet. The older couple prepares to leave and then asks Aidan and Greenlee to be the witnesses at their wedding!

The two thugs haul Frankie to a truck outside where Fletcher is waiting! He holds a gun on Frankie and makes him listen as he calls Randi and lets her go. Fletcher tries to manipulate her by saying he is letting her go only because he knows she will come back to him and hangs up. He tells Frankie that he will always have a hold on Randi and says Frankie needs to back off or Randi might disappear forever! He gives Frankie a paper and says he can buy Randi from him - for five times her annual salary! He says if Frankie doesn't pay, then Randi will.

At ConFusion, Randi hangs up the phone and gets worried. She waits for Frankie for a while but he doesn't show up. Jake arrives for lunch with Joe but sees Randi and joins her. She tells him about looking for a new job. Amanda arrives, sees Jake with Randi and gets annoyed. She joins them. Jake introduces the women and when he says she is a friend of Frankie's, Amanda relaxes. Joe calls to cancel lunch so Amanda and Randi talk makeup. Amanda invites Jake to lunch but he says he has to go. Randi asks Amanda about work at Fusion and Amanda mentions they are hiring. Randi is very excited and says she'd love the chance. Amanda promises that she is in the running for the job and goes back upstairs. Frankie arrives for their lunch date. Randi excitedly hugs him and says her life is finally getting back on track! She tells him about Fletcher's call and the job offer; Frankie's distraction bothers her. He blames it on Cassandra and asks her about the job. She fills him in; as she talks, Frankie goes over his conversation with Fletcher. She tells him to come clean about what is going on. He tells her to weigh all of her job offers and then offers to give her money to make a fresh start in another town! Randi is crushed and storms off. Frankie stops her and says he isn't trying to get rid of her but she doesn't believe him. Frankie says he doesn't want her to go and is about to kiss her when she pulls away, saying he is just like Fletcher! She walks away. After she is gone, Frankie calls Fletcher to agree to the pay-off! Fletcher gives him a week to come up with the cash.

While working out at the beach, Jake sees the strange woman again.

Next on All My Children:

Aidan and Greenlee help the older couple get married.

Greenlee proposes to Aidan!

The Hubbard and Martin families have a barbecue; Cassandra uses the event to get to Jesse.

Okay, I need to vent here for a minute.

Hello Frakie - your dad is the Chief of Police and you can't think of another solution to the Fletcher issue than to give into his threats and "buy" Randi from him??!? How the heck did you get through medical school without using your brain!

AMC suck right now, with what they done to Annie, is there anyone out there that think the same

Safire8645...glad to help you fill in on the background of AMC and its cast of characters. I've been hooked for 30 years...since my junior year in high school. The online sites like this one really help me stay with the story lines because life, wife and two boys make it hard to find an hour each day to watch.

If you REALLY want to bone up on what has gone down in Pine Valley since 1970, there is a year-by-year recap on the official ABC web site. You can also go to wikipedia.org and enter 'all my children' in the search box and there's quite a bit of information there.

And as you've no doubt noticed, those of us who are devoted to All My Kids for the long term are struggling recently with inconsistent writing which has caused characters acting WAY out of character. One of the gold standards of AMC over the years had been its loyalty to its actors and its respect for its viewers.

Story lines were usually clever, took full advantage of the strengths of its actors and would have twists and turns that actually moved the story along, rather than just prolonged it endlessly. The writers were obviously keenly aware of the back stories of their characters and would on many occasions weave together seemingly separate story lines into logical and entertaining new 'hybrid' stories.

Today, certainly not helped by the recent upheavals with writing and directing at AMC, many of the characters are too vague, too fuzzy and/or too wishy-washy to be able to invest in. With rare exceptions, secrets are made and then broken in a few days or weeks, rather than woven into a longer-term story. Maybe it's the shorter attention spans we are all supposed to have nowadays, or the greater number of distractions.

But I remain hopeful things can change. Several key actors have been written off AMC over the past few years, but David Canary (Adam/Stuart) and Michael Knight (Tad) are tremendously talented actors with incredibly rich characters. The return of Jesse and Angie has been a big boost, and Walt Willie's Jack is a great character, when they can write him a story that isn't him panting over Erica. And Susan Lucci can be riveting when she's given great material...sadly, it's been a while since that has been the case.

Okay, I clearly am 'talking' way too much...sorry!

I agree, Frankie go to your Dad for help. Do you even have the money? If you don't do you know what will happen to you, come on man get it together.

David Canary and Michael E. Knight are truly two of the very best - I always love their scenes together - they bring out the best in each other. I also love having Darnell Williams back - hope he stays awhile. And you're right about Susan Lucci - given the proper material, she shines.

Hey AMCGuy ~~~~ I LOVE your imput! Thanks for sharing w/ us. As a 30+ year AMC fan, I totally agree w/ everything you said. Thanks for the sites to go to for old s/l's, and old characters connections to the show.

Hey Ringleader ~~~ ITA w/ you regarding Frankie giving in to Fletcher's blackmail! Go to your Dad! Giving in to blackmail is not the answer. How does he plan to come up w/ the money Fletcher is demanding? He would have to do something 'illigal!' How does he plan on taking care of Randi if he's in jail? Wake up and smell the coffee already! hehehe

How did Greenlee and Aiden get to Vegas before Annie/Ryan/Kendall/Zack? Oh well....it doesn't really matter. It was cute watching them inneract w/ the elderly couple getting ready to 'wed!' But, I'm sure the s/l has a lot more in store for us once the rest arrive!

SanBar, I agree 100% and I have been saying it too. Do you remember when Kendall was acting like a lunatic at Greenlee for Spike's "deafness"? Annie took care of everyone. She listened to Ryan, Zach and Kendall and kept their combined family afloat.
Now the AMC writers have turned her into a lunatic because Richie was a sociopath. I don't like it. What about Emma and the new baby?

A few "oh gee" moments today.

1. Gee, Annie, do you really think Ryan is talking about you when he said he was thinking about the woman he loves??

2. Gee, Kendall, what Zach says to you goes in one ear and right out the other. I advise duct tape.

3. Gee, Frankie, go to your chief of police dad. Where do you plan on getting that kind of money?

4. Gee, Amanda, you are ready to hire Randi-what about background and qualifications. If that goes by the wayside, it is no wonder Amanda and Babe are employees.

I really hope Aiden and Greenlee tie the knot. Unfortunately, that won't mean anything to that nut case Annie.

Thanks, Susie1000...my wife usually just rolls her eyes when it comes to my addiction to AMC, so it's nice to have others express actual interest in my perspective. But I will try to be less verbose in the future.

As I was checking out the wikipedia site before recommending it to Safire, I was reminded about all the ground-breaking story lines that AMC has had, from Erica's abortion (well, at least we THOUGHT it was an abortion way back then!) to Ruth's rape to Amy's stance against the war in Vietnam, Ann's mental illness up through the Cindy/AIDS story (still one of the most poignant and achingly sad death scenes EVER on AMC), I wish AMC would get back to telling more compelling stories.

I give them credit for the Zarf/Zoe attempt, but they really muffed that up with a muddled story arc, IMHO. I guess since we are both 30+ year "veterans," it's hard to come up with new angles...does the Randi story remind you of, as Phoebe would put it, "that Donna Beck person"?

But it's simply just too easy to crank out the 'I hope no one finds out about our affair' stories and the 'I'm in love with your spouse so you'd better watch out' stories. And done well, they can still be compelling. But my hope is writers will respect our intelligence and give us more meaningful topics to consider. Assisted suicide and its consequences, for example...the power to choose when you die vs. the religious reasons not to. The decision to donate a kidney to a brother who needs one because drug abuse shut his down: should you or should you not? There are plenty of potential story lines beyond affairs, betrayals and murders, and we as viewers are capable of following them and making our own conclusions over what is right or wrong.

WELL said AMCguy!!! I totally agree with you. I am to the point that nothing is enthusiastic to me anymore with these characters. There storylines has really damaged there character. It has gotten to the point where there is NO FLAME to even start up!! The writers have really let alot of us down. The Greenlee storyline is to the point of "Who Cares, Along with the rest of the gang. The only storyline that really concerns me is What are they going to do with EMMA!! They have really destroyed Annie's entire character.
