Ryan’s got a dreamy New Year’s scene set up for Annie at Casa Lavery – fire roaring in the fireplace, dinner for two, glittering candles. Annie’s surprised to see he’s done all this while she was putting the kids to bed. “I know, I know – it’s a curse to be so wonderful,” Ryan says. They eat, toast, slow dance, and promise one another that 2008 will be better.

Richie is on the phone in the hospital, growling, “I get the drill – my sister knocks me off, you collect the insurance.” Enter Lily, who tells him that it’s a good thing he’s been locked up. She tells him that she’d overheard him talking about “murder,” in his hospital room. She then gives him a murder mystery book, saying she thinks if you get every detail down pat, it’s possible to commit the perfect crime. Richie picks Lily’s brain about planning the perfect crime of setting someone else up to take the rap for a murder. Lily unknowingly gives him step-by-step instructions on how to set up Annie as his murderer.

Erica, in a ruffly red dress, enters the yacht club and immediately catches Jack’s eye. Both convinced that it was the other who sent the invitation, they sit to have a drink together. After talking awhile, they figure out that someone set them up to meet and deduce that it was Lily. Erica starts to leave, but Jack won’t let her go. He wants to celebrate with Erica that Greenlee’s alive and safe, but Erica brings up old hurts, namely when he’d told her that he didn’t love her anymore. “We’re destined to need each other, we’re fated to love each other. And you can’t look me in the eye and tell me that you don’t feel that, too,” she tells him.

Back in Ryan’s love nest, Annie has a moment of panic that Richie will be released and “it will start all over again.” Ryan tells Annie that he’s safeguarded Richie’s detention by funding a new psych ward in exchange for keeping Richie hospitalized. But Ryan doesn’t want to talk about Richie anymore and he and Annie get warm and cozy in front of the fire.

Kendall’s in mid-confession in Greenlee’s hospital room. “Greenlee didn’t try to kidnap Spike. I lied to the police. I’m the one who was guilty,” she tells Derek. Zach jumps in and tells Derek to arrest him instead of Kendall, saying Derek has the wrong suspect. Kendall won’t let Zach confess and things get confusing. Derek wants to ask questions, but both Greenlee and Aidan try to get Derek to leave them alone to recover. Derek says he’ll go back to the station but he expects someone to come in and “do the right thing.” He leaves.

Krystal and Tad come home, flirty and reminiscing about their first New Year’s Eve together. They don’t even make it upstairs before the heavy kissing and removing of clothes commences. But, oops! They’re interrupted by Colby who is “starving!” and wants to eat before she leaves. Colby invites them to go with her to see the band play, but Tad and Krystal beg off. Colby steps out to get ready to leave, and Krystal reiterates that she wants to be Tad’s wife in every way. They kiss some more. Colby comes back in; they give her a curfew of “dawn,” and she tells them her New Year’s Resolution is “for all this crazy stuff to go away.” They tell her it’s absolutely possible and she leaves. Just as they get hot and heavy, Baby Jenny cries are heard over the baby monitor, interrupting them once again.

Out in the hospital hallway, Hannah overhears Derek telling his “men” that Kendall and Zach are trying to “stonewall” the police and that one way or another Kendall is going to go down for what she did.

With Derek gone from Greenlee’s room, the gang argues about who is guilty of what. Kendall tells Greenlee that she has no idea all the ways she’s betrayed her. Greenlee’s curious: is there something else that Kendall’s done? Kendall backs off and steps out to “get some air.” Greenlee asks Aidan to get her a sandwich, leaving Greenlee and Zach alone. In steps Hannah. Zach gives Hannah her not-so-subtle walking papers, saying they’ll “talk at the office.” He and Greenlee are alone again, joking. Suddenly, Greenlee starts to feel ill, and passes out. Zach rushes for help.

Aidan confronts Kendall in the hospital corridor. “Do I have to worry that you’re going to tell the truth that we slept together?” he asks. Kendall’s totally wracked with guilt over what they did, but Aidan calls her selfish for breaking Greenlee’s and Zach’s hearts to get the guilt off her chest. They’re interrupted by a nurse, who tells them to get back to Greenlee’s room, asap.

Dr. Joe looks over Greenlee and says her blood glucose level is too low. The nurse injects her IV with sugar and Greenlee wakes up; it’s just hypoglycemia. “How’s my best buddy?” Greenlee says, smiling up at Kendall.

We end with a musical montage, “Apologies,” by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals:

Kendall tucks Zach into bed, whispering, “I love you…and I’m sorry I have to do this.” Jack toasts Erica with a warm smile. Ryan sips champagne wrapped in Annie’s arms inside tangled blankets. Their phone rings, but they let it go to the machine. It’s Richie, saying, “I hope you get everything you wish for. I know I will.” Krystal and Tad toast, then get down to finishing the business they started. Hannah, alone, pulls a scrapbook out from under the bed – it’s filled with photos and news clippings about Zach. Aidan toasts Greenlee (water) and curls up in bed beside her.

Kendall approaches Derek at the police station. “It was my idea. All mine,” she confesses. She’s booked and her mug shot is taken. Looks like Kendall will ring in 2008 in the clink.
