Loud and Clear

Monday, September 10 2007
Ava might be pregnant; Greenlee and Aidan make a cozy bet; Wes has the hots for Babe; Spike has a near-death experience; JR and Adam are at it again; Erica tells it loud and clear: Dr. Hilliard is bad, bad, bad!

The Comeback is the place to be tonight! At the bar, Babe is holding an envelope and beaming – she’s gotten her high school diploma! Wes, the new bartender, flirts openly with her, and gives her a cupcake with the word “congratulations” written on it. Jonathan and Ava enter, holding hands. Wes right away recognizes Ava and flirts with her, too, but he doesn’t really mean it. It’s obvious already – he’s all about Babe. Outside, Greenlee is spewing venom at Aidan, sure that he’s the one who told Jack about her hiring Dr. Hilliard. When Aidan denies this, she thinks he’s lying. But Aidan springs it on her that not only did he not tell Jack, but she told Jack herself. What’s worse, he tells her that she said “other things” while she was in the hospital as well.

Erica is in Dr. Hilliard’s office, surprised that he’s the doctor that’s going to be treating Spike. Seems they have a history together. They knew each other at the Betty Ford Clinic! Seems Doc Hilliard was addicted to pain killers and his medical license had been suspended for prescribing to himself. Erica tells him that she plans to keep Kendall away from him – that he’s peddling false hope – and calls him a con man. He claims that he had a spiritual awakening while in rehab, that he wanted to heal people in a more enlightened way. “You’re a fraud,” she says, “and I have the power and the television show to bring you down.”

Kendall's sure the noise woke Spike!

At the Slater house, Kendall, pulling Spike out of his crib, is elated. She tells Zach to call the doctor, sure that Spike’s crying because he heard the ruckus she and Zach had made. Zach tries clapping his hands to get Spike’s attention and gets nothing. Kendall is sure that’s because Spike needs to calm down first. Ryan and Annie enter, immediately worried about the crying baby. Kendall’s quick to spread the good news – the treatment is working and Spike can hear!

Even Stuart can't thaw Adam's icy reception of JR

At the Chandler mansion, JR’s enjoying the sight of Adam in Stuart’s clothes. “It’s too early for Halloween,” he laughs. Stuart steps in, tries to smooth things over, telling JR that Adam is doing the right thing – that his heart’s in the right place. Adam tells Stuart to be quiet. “Who you trying to con into believing that you’re a good guy?” JR asks. Stuart pleads with Adam to tell JR the truth about what he’s doing, but Adam tells Stuart to leave. Stuart goes, and JR lets it go.

Ryan is shocked – Spike can hear? – and Kendall gives him all the details of what happened. She’s too wrapped up in the moment and talking so fast she doesn’t even stop to think that Spike might be crying for another reason. She begins singing to him, but still he won’t calm down. Zach gets Dr. Norton on the phone. Dr. Norton’s on the way, but Kendall says she doesn’t want Norton – she wants Dr. Hilliard. Dr. Norton arrives, and Kendall is obviously not thrilled to see him. She picks up the phone to call Hilliard, interrupting Erica’s threats. On the other end of the line, Hilliard, surprised that the vitamins are working already, says he’ll be right over and offers to let Erica come see the results of his treatment herself. Dr. Norton notices a rash on Spike and says that he doesn’t think Spike woke as a reaction to the noise, but as an allergic reaction. Suddenly Spike stops breathing! Dr. Norton whips into frantic action. He revives Spike, to everyone’s relief, and Spike cries. Kendall cradles Spike.

With Stuart gone, Adam’s all business, telling JR to get down to it or get out. JR tries to tell Adam that he has a business proposition for him, but has a hard time keeping a straight face. When he collects his thoughts, he pitches Ava.com to Adam. Adam is totally disinterested in anything that might involve Ava. JR tries to defend Ava – saying taking her on would be like discovering Michael Jordan in grade school. He works hard to push for her, and Adam begins to suggest that JR has a thing for her. “It’s not about who Ava is, it’s about what she can sell,” JR says. Adam passes on JR’s offer, but makes him a counter-offer. He says he has a plan to get back everything that Zach stole from them, and offers JR partnership in Chandler Enterprises.

Greenlee and Aidan bet on romance

Back at The Comeback, Wes loads Jonathan and Ava with food that they didn’t order, on the house, to make up for hitting on Jonathan’s girl. Jonathan’s cool about it and he and Wes shake hands, but Ava darts for the restroom. Outside, Greenlee finally comes to grips with the fact that she was the one who blabbed about Hilliard to Jack. “I need a drink,” she says, lightheartedly. Greenlee whips out the locket/pocket watch she’d found on the beach and she and Aidan wonder about where it came from. Greenlee thinks it’s romantic, compares it to The Gift of the Magi. Something about the locket makes Greenlee romantic, but Aidan hardly shares her dreamy side. They make a friendly bet to find out what the history behind the locket really is: romantic like Greenlee suspects, or evil like Aidan suspects?

Could Ava be pregnant?

Babe catches Ava as she’s coming out of the restroom. Ava claims she has an upset stomach. Babe tells her she looks awful. Babe questions Ava about how she and Jonathan are doing. Ava is closed down about the relationship, but Babe is clearly getting at something. “Is it possible that you could be pregnant?” she asks. Ava denies it, saying it’s just a stomach bug, and storms away. She grabs Jonathan from the bar and drags him out.

It may have been the vitamins...

Back at The Slater house, the crisis is over, and Joe Martin arrives, just in time to tell them that the episode was caused by an allergic reaction, causing anaphylaxis. Trying to figure out the culprit of the allergy, Dr. Norton quizzes what has changed in Spike’s diet. Joe tries to break it to Kendall gently that she’s wrong – Spike can’t hear, but stubborn Kendall won’t believe him. Joe asks about the vitamins that she’s giving him. He surmises that the allergic reaction might be from the vitamins. Joe wants to look them over, but there are no ingredients listed on the bottle. Good timing! Dr. Hilliard and Erica arrive. An angry Ryan gets in Dr. Hilliard’s face. “What the hell did you do to my son?” he demands. He demands to know what was in the vitamins. Dr. Hilliard is evasive with his answer, but promises to give Joe a detailed list. Ryan and Erica are moving into angry mob mode, but Joe backs up Dr. Hilliard, saying they don’t know it was the vitamins until they get an ingredient list. Ryan threatens Dr. Hilliard, as he’s leaving, to never come near Spike again. With Hilliard gone, Erica warns Kendall not to believe a word that Hilliard says. Kendall immediately starts beating herself up for having listened to him. Erica tells Kendall that it’s not her fault, and then springs it on Kendall (and the rest) that Greenlee hired him.

Adam could be sorry he missed JR's boat

Back at the Chandler mansion, JR is now busy turning down Adam’s counter-offer, even when Adam offers to pay off the yacht. JR says it was a huge mistake to come to Adam and warns that Adam will be kicking himself for passing up the offer. JR appeals to Adam’s patriarchal side, saying he’s going to make something out of nothing, just the same way Adam did. Adam says JR has no clue what it means to work for something – “You’ll never do what I did,” he says. “You have the brains, but you don’t have the drive.” But Adam’s goading doesn’t work. JR isn’t buying, saying Adam will end up begging him for another chance.
