A few new faces will be joining the cast of All My Children in the next few weeks as the storyline surrounding Spike's deafness takes center stage. Fans have already begun to see some of the new faces, including Annie's estranged father Walter.

Walter is played by deaf actor Bob Hiltermann, who is proficient with sign language and can also speak clearly. He began his appearances the week of August 13th.

Hiltermann is probably best known for playing the part of Orin in the 1986 hit film "Children of a Lesser God". Marlee Matlin also starred in the movie.

JQ DePaiva, son of One Life To Live star Kassie DePaiva, Blair, and James DePaiva, ex-Max, is another of the actors who will join the show. JQ was born deaf and now, at the age of 10, attends school with hearing children. JQ received his first cochlear implant at 18 months and a second implant at the age of 8. JQ will be a guest on Erica's New Beginnings talk show September 20, 21 and 24.

Fans have been very vocal about the new storyline. Here is what a few of them had to say.

Cathy Clemons wrote, "Being the parent of a deaf child, please try to portray all areas of treatments factfully. We personally have known children that the cochlear implant did not help. We were glad you picked this story line so long as it is not just a commercial for the cochlear implant as the sole means of success."

AmisMommy said, "I work in the field and am watching AMC very intently right now to see how they will handle this storyline. . .imagine what kind of education this storyline can provide. Being deaf or blind is not the end of the world. True, it is a tragedy that this child can no longer hear, but what an opportunity the writers have created to educate the public."

Stephanie Thompson's son has a cochlear implant. She wrote, "My son is 11 and he lost his hearing at the age of 5. The way All My Children is going about this and saying there is no way to help his [Spike's] hearing is wrong, too. My son does not have hearing like what we have but at least he can hear."

AMC is known for being the first to take on some serious subject areas - in the 1970's the show took on the Vietnam War, then Erica had an abortion and in 2000 introduced the first openly lesbian character, Bianca, to have a contract role.

What are your thoughts on this new storyline? Is this a chance to educate the public about deafness? Or have the AMC writers gone too far from their daytime premise of love and heartache?

I am very curious if the real deaf people will be on the AMC show and I would like to see the ones with hearing aids instead of cochlear implants......

From what we have heard, the storyline will cover all the bases - hearing aids, cochlear implants... and the actors they are bringing in are hearing impaired in real life, not hearing actors hired to play deaf characters.

My bother in law is deaf and he has ba great wife two kids and is a happy productive person, born deaf. i know that it is so very hard on the mothers and fathers of the deaf because they do not want to see their babys go throught any hardships of being different, its hard enough to grow up with no disablities. hope it will be written well for the education of all on this subject.

I have a neice that was born totally deaf. Never had implants and made it all the way thru school in a Deaf School in KY. I hope you use the right story lines for this part of the show.

I congradulate AMC for this storyline - I cannot imagine having such a young child faced with this during the most important time in their developement - I know AMC will show it can be done... I in no means - wish to compare the two - but my beloved 16 year old dog has been deaf for about 4 years and she is like my child. It was amazing to me how her other senses compensated for her hearing loss - She was not about to stop living because she could not hear - I created a sign lanquage for her - for basic commands - and over the years it has expanded to over 30 phrases which she clearly understands - I just hope AMC shows hope and I hope Kendall soon realizes that the resources are out there to deal with this - even if Spike never hears - with compassion and love - he will grow - Like I said I do not want to offend anyone comparing a dog to a child - you animal lovers out there know what I feel - Poor little Spike - but I have faith he will grow up and prosper - even if unable to hear - I have a blind friend who - I swear has a better sense of his surroundings than many that see - And he is humble and always accepts my assistance at curbs, opening doors, etc - but he seems to know before I do when the landscape changes - ! So I do commend AMC for controveral story lines - but I would also like to see lighter story lines blended into the canvas - I miss the days of Jenny and Greg, Nina and Cliff - Benny Sago - Donna and Estelle - even old Billy Clyde - And please new writers! Get Brooke back to Pine Valley! I am tired of all the pretty people who seem to dominate the canvas on soaps today - Also - it is time to bring in a new core family - like the Martins and Tylers used to be to the show - Soaps seem to be stringing along with aged casts who disapear - being replaced with uninteresting teens - with no core central families - Who can ever forget Kate Martin, Mona Tyler - and Ruth Martin! It is time to bring in an older cast - to carry on the AMC values of these legends legends - Keep the kids - but either these kids have a handicap or are sexualy active - Maybe I am just old fashioned - but i would love to see a family in Pine Valley - struggling with daily issues - showing the LOVE that we miss! Come on writers! Keep the great DEAF story line going - but bring in one or two new core families - And get out of this Greenlee/Kendall crap - Kendall must be so tired - she is on every day - Thanks for letting me have a say here - ! Hi, I am 27 years old and I am hearing impaired but I can read lips and can talk pretty good and knowledge sign language and I saw this soap.com about deaf actors will join this show and I wish I could join this show that would be great for have deaf actors to join show or movies... Anyway, I was born deaf but wear hearing aid whole my life since I was about 3 or 4 years old and never had cochlear implants but I was almost thought about that but I still don't know about it.. But I decide not to have that because I am afraid to have cochlear implants and if it not working and I can't go back on hearing aid.. So hope the show will be great!! But if interesting more deaf then holler me..

Thanks,
Robert
