Jake Martin, called Joey as a child, was born to Ruth and Joe Martin. He was a by-the-book kid who always followed the rules. He met and fell in love with Emily Ann Sago and married her against his parents' wishes. Emily Ann lost her mind when she realized her birth parents were Billy Clyde Tuggle and Estelle LaTour; she became pregnant but lost the baby. Unable to cope, Emily Ann was committed to an institution. Jake divorced Emily Ann and moved to Stanford to attend Medical School.
Jake eventually dropped out of Stanford and began working as a handyman. During this time he met Liza Colby and they began dating. Liza eventually realized "Jake" was Tad's brother "Joey" and broke off their affair. He was hired by Adam, whom Liza had married, as an assistant at WRCW. Adam hoped that Jake would get a tape of Liza fooling around so he could divorce her. Jake was still in love with Liza and refused to do Adam's bidding.
Next he met and began dating Belinda but that relationship never went anywhere. He began working at Pine Valley Hospital where he met Allie Doyle. They were immediately attracted but Dr. David Hayward threw a wrench in their relationship because he was Allie's ex. David proposed to her but she turned him down so he blackmailed her by threatening to tell Joe Martin she falsified her college transcripts. David tried to ruin Jake, too, by drugging Adam Chandler while he was recovering from a stroke. Adam was nearly killed and David blamed Jake for it. Jake was suspended from the hospital.
Soon after, Liza decided it was time to have a baby. Jake offered to be her sperm donor and to not take a role in the child's life. Liza agreed. Then, she and Adam reunited. Jake, who had married Gillian, was afraid that Adam would harm the child and decided he would sue for custody. During this time Gillian and Ryan were involved in a car accident. Jake became her doctor. Gillian knew the truth about Liza's child, Colby, - that Adam switched sperm samples and was the child's biological father - but was unable to tell Jake because of her injuries. When he finally learned the truth he felt betrayed by Gillian. He left town angry which led to Gillian and Ryan getting back together. Gillian was eager for Jake to return so she could divorce him to be with Ryan. Jake had gone to Chechnya and was injured during the fighting there. When Jake returned, still in bad shape, Gillian realized she couldn't leave him and began neglecting Ryan. Ryan eventually told her their relationship was over.
Gillian and Jake eventually did divorce but remained friends.
Jake became involved with Greenlee Smythe and was also focused on destroying Dr. David Hayward. Greenlee couldn't let go of Leo, though, and Jake turned to Mia. She didn't keep his interest long and Jake was soon dating Greenlee again. Jake learned that David had put Dixie in danger while treating her heart condition but both Dixie and Tad convinced him not to go public with the information. Thinking he had the upper hand, David went to the board to have Joe removed from his Chief-of-Staff position. The board agreed that Joe was slipping but then named Jake as the new Chief of Staff and not David!
Jake and Mia soon got back together but Mia was being blackmailed by Trey. Mia told Jake that Trey helped her give up her son for adoption. Trey wanted to disrupt the child's adoption but Jake helped Mia convince them not to destroy the boy's life. A short time later, Liza accidentally pushed Mia off a balcony at the Chandler manse. Jake wanted Liza to pay for her crime but Mia would not press charges. They became closer than ever until Mia decided to go into business with Greenlee, Liza, Kendall and Simone. Mia worked long hours getting Fusion off the ground and began associating with handsome men, making Jake jealous. He proposed but Mia wasn't ready for marriage. Insecure because of her supposed rejection, Jake turned to Allison, an intern at the hospital, and they began an affair. When Simone caught them in a broom closet, Jake ran away from Pine Valley, leaving only a note for Mia and for Tad. Soon after, the Martins received word that Jake had joined the Doctors Without Borders program.
Jake returned to town a few months later with fiancee Carolyn in town. Mia was upset, especially when Jake blamed their break-up on her. Tad told him off but Jake stuck to his guns. Joe and Ruth were just glad to have their son back but Jake said he couldn't stay in Pine Valley because of his past. Both he and Carolyn returned to their jobs with Doctors Without Borders.

At the cabin, Jake tells Taylor she isn't alone. He asks about Iraq and she tells him she was stationed south of Baghdad with a convoy. Her job was to direct planes and trucks where to go but on one trip, they came to a checkpoint and an old car blasted into their convoy and exploded. "It felt like it went on forever," she says as she describes the fire fight that followed with insurgents. Four of her men were killed in the explosion; she cries and says one man, Brot, grabbed a gun and started to return fire but another mortar shell went off very near him. Frankie, who was also in the fight, was saved but Brot was hurt very badly. She had to go with her men so Frankie focused on Brot. Taylor was grabbed from behind by an insurgent and killed him to save herself. A week later Brot died. "We were going to get married," she cries. He tries to comfort her but Taylor says the only thing that will make her whole is to return to her troops. Amanda arrives to see how Taylor is. She says she is fine and thanks Amanda for taking care of Randi. She leaves. Jake changes clothes and takes a drink.
Jake pronounces Fletcher dead and Frankie immediately calls Jesse. Carmen helps clear the room. Jake takes Taylor aside and asks what happened. She says she did what she had to do and worries that the Army won't understand. Jesse arrives and apologizes to Randi because his undercover cop slipped up. Randi is shocked that they were having her followed but is relieved that Fletcher is gone and out of her life. Jesse asks what happened. Taylor interrupts; Frankie leads Randi away. She takes the blame for Fletcher's death, saying she was trying to save Randi. Jake backs up Taylor's story; Jesse insists that she come with him to the station house!
Back at the party, Kendall can't take her mind off of Greenlee. Amanda returns to Babe, who is worried after hearing Randi scream, and says a low-life came after Randi. Frankie takes Randi out of the party. Babe worries that the launch has been damaged. Colby comes over with Adam and JR, excited about the fragrance. She asks for another spritz over and over but Adam won't hear of her putting more of the contaminated brew on her body. He takes Petey aside; Petey isn't sure how the perfume will affect Colby but says it shouldn't be any worse than when Opal was exposed. Adam angrily blames Petey, saying Colby wasn't supposed to be affected. Ryan grabs Annie and demands to know why she didn't tell him about Joe's bed rest ultimatum. She says her doctor's words are none of his business since he has been lying for months about Greenlee. Kendall interrupts and demands that Annie get to work doing damage control because of the attack. Annie leaves to talk to the press and Kendall tells Ryan to stop letting Annie use his kids against him. Babe and Amanda wonder what to do about the attack. Amanda nearly tells her about Randi's hooker past but keeps her mouth shut. JR interrupts and tells Babe they have to get Colby home because her "problem" is back. Just then Colby walks by, giggling drunkenly. Amanda says she can handle things. Jack finds Carmen. She is upset about the attack. Reporters begin questioning her about Erica's early exit but Carmen doesn't know anything. Jack takes her aside and suggests they leave. Carmen is worried about why Erica may have left the party early. Jack says it doesn't matter. Kendall corners Amanda at the bar and says she knew this would happen. Amanda tells her to back off because this could have happened to any one of them. Greenlee comes over and says the same thing; Kendall won't listen. She tries calling Zach again but he doesn't answer. Kendall runs into Aidan and tells him to stop smothering Greenlee because it won't stop Greens from returning to Ryan! Annie finds Aidan a few minutes later and tells him to keep Greenlee under wraps and away from Ryan!
At the police station, Randi tells Jesse that Taylor saved her life. After the questioning, they return to the outer office. Jesse leads Taylor into the interrogation room as Frankie says Taylor looked just like she did in Iraq after the attack. Taylor tells Jesse she had no choice but to kill Fletcher at first but he keeps questioning her. She finally admits that she may have overreacted but as soon as she does, Jesse says Fletcher would have killed her and then Randi if she didn't stop him. He says this is a clear cut case of self-defense. Taylor is worried about the Army finding out and Jesse promises not to tell if they don't ask. Taylor walks back into the squad room; Randi hugs her. Frankie tells Randi he'll take her home and she agrees. Jake tries to talk to Taylor but she leaves.
Jake tracks down Taylor outside his cabin as she is scrubbing off the makeup. He asks if she wants to talk. She backs away from him and won't talk. He sees her shaking and asks how long this has been going on. She won't say.
