Zach arrives at the hospital to find Josh is already there, checking on Ian. Josh updates Zach on the Chandler Enterprises deal - Adam is trying to cause trouble. He asks about Kendall and Zach updates Josh on the new living together routine. A nurse comes out and asks Zach if he'd like to hold Ian! Zach is really nervous when they tell him about a new "kangarooing" technique - where he can hold Ian on his chest, without a shirt - to introduce skin to skin contact. Zach decides to give it a try. Josh tells Zach how to hold Ian - with firm and constant pressure - and then shows him inside. Excited, Zach takes a seat beside the warmer and the nurse hands Ian to him! The baby is so small that Zach's hands cover him. Across the room, Josh takes a couple of picture with his cell phone but then the monitors begin to go off and the nurse takes Ian back very quickly. She explains that he is fine but the contact accelerated the baby's heart beat. Josh assures Zach that he can hold the baby again really soon. A while later the nurse gets Zach ready and hands Ian to him so they can try kangarooing again.
Tad tells Joe, Josh and Zach that Kendall is on her way back. Lily arrives to bring Zach a few papers but he can't concentrate on work. Josh takes over for him and Lily chatters on about Zach needing a closet where he can go alone. He thanks her for bringing the papers. Josh prepares to go back to the office to catch up on some work. Lily offers Zach a present - a book for Ian, custom made not to include red, that she plans to read to him. Lily and Josh leave. Zach is touched by the gift and begins to read the book. Kendall arrives. She apologizes for leaving and not telling him where she was going but defends her actions by saying she was trying to help Spike. "While you were gone, our little boy could have died," Zach says. They don't talk any more until Dr. Delano arrives, telling them that Ian made it through surgery but things are still tough and go. He orders them to stay away from the baby, not even stand next to him, until they are given the go ahead by him. He wants to keep things very sterile for Ian because of the brain hemorrhaging. He does allow them to stand at the window to watch the baby as the nurses wheel him in, this time in an incubator! Zach begins to read the book aloud to Ian, even though the baby can't possibly hear him. Kendall begins to cry. Zach finishes the book and walks away from Kendall, who follows him, asking him to talk to her. She tries to explain why she left - to help Spike! "It had nothing to do with Ian," she says, but Zach only sees that as a problem. He reminds her that Ian has been in more trouble than Spike since the moment he was born and Kendall hasn't paid any attention to that! When Kendall continues to apologize Zach tells her to stop, that he has to concentrate on Ian now. He returns to the window to watch the baby. Kendall whispers, "Always only you. Remember?" she asks, telling Zach that she needs him. Zach walks away, telling Kendall that their son has needed her for days now!
On his way out of the hospital Jamie runs into Josh, who congratulates him on the new project in Africa. As they talk about family, Jamie tells Josh that it isn't just his family, the Martins are Josh's family, too, if he would let them in. Josh isn't he needs more family than the Kane's - who are a lot to deal with - but Jamie encourages him to give the Martin's a chance. Jamie walks away.
Zach asks Joe what they can expect from the brain hemorrhaging and Joe tells him that the new problem is fixable. He asks for the nurse and Kendall but neither can be found. Down the hall, the nurse finds only Ryan in Kendall's room. She explains that they need Kendall now and Ryan leaves to talk with Zach. Worried, Zach tells Ryan about the new doctor and his fears that Kendall went off half-cocked. Joe leaves and returns to tell them Kendall's car isn't in the lot! Zach tries calling her but can't get through. When Zach can't remember the doctor's name, Ryan promises to track Kendall down so Zach can concentrate on Ian. He calls Tad to get started. Joe counsels Zach about the problems with Ian, assuring him that if they can relieve the pressure they can help Ian, but they have to do the surgery now. Zach signs off, hoping that he is doing the right thing. Josh walks up and takes the brunt of Zach's anger. He is so mad that Kendall walked out of the hospital with Spike, without telling anyone! Josh sticks around, trying to comfort Zach with what he knows of premies. Calmer, Zach watches Ian, hoping against hope that Ian will come out of this. He watches as the docs wheel Ian down to surgery. "Kendall has no idea how much she was needed here today," he says.
Josh meets Greenlee at the yacht club, where she is recovering from the hangover and from her showdown with Kendall. Josh can't believe she went back to the hospital after he told her to stay away, still he tells Greenlee that Spike is now out of ICU. She is relieved and eager to learn more. When she begins talking about getting Spike a second opinion, Josh heads her off, telling her that no one will make Spike hear without help. He changes the subject and reaches for her computer to see what she has been doing with her time. Greenlee tells him about the new Fusion campaign she's been working on but still doesn't want Josh to see it. She asks him to leave and he does. When she is alone, Greens opens the computer and continues her research on cochlear implants! Josh returns just in time to catch her! "Search all you want. There are no miracles for Spike," he says. Josh leaves and Greenlee keeps researching, finally finding a website for an alternative doctor and begins to have hope that he might be able to cure Spike.
After running all of the tests, the doctors tell the Slater and Lavery families that Spike is indeed profoundly deaf and it can't be fixed. Neither Ryan nor Kendall want to believe it. The doctors tell them with an implant Spike may be able to hear at some point in the future. When she learns that the implant cannot be done immediately, Kendall demands that Spike be taken somewhere else right away. Erica, Josh and Zach try to calm her down but she tells them that Spike needs a cure right now - not sometime down the road. Zach holds Kendall and tells her that moving Spike now could hurt him even more. Jonathan asks Ryan what he can do to fix this mess but Ryan doesn't have any answers. Annie goes to him, too, telling him that things will work out. Jack distracts Erica, asking her to come with him to decompress for a little while. Erica doesn't want to leave but he eventually convinces her to go with him. Josh goes to the hall and makes a call, he leaves an angry message, telling the person to call him back right away.
Greenlee arrives at the hospital, tells the nurses at the hub that she is Bianca and asks for directions to the room. The nurse won't give her anything but Greenlee pushes the issue. The nurse sees Bianca's name on the list and points the way to the conference room. Before she can get away, Josh sees her and tells her to leave! She asks how Spike is and Josh gives her the news. Greenlee insists that Josh take her to Kendall so she can fix things but he refuses, telling her she sound like a crazy person. Jonathan walks up and demands that Josh get rid of Greenlee - right now! Josh defends Greens to Jonathan, who can't believe it. "You defend your family, your don't support their enemies," Jonathan says as Greenlee hobbles away from them.
Annie visits Kendall in Spike's room and offers to help her with him. Annie leaves. A nurse comes in and asks Kendall to let her take Spike so that Kendall can consult with Joe. In the hall, Jack visits with coffee for Ryan and Zach. He asks about Erica and learns that she left a while before. Annie returns to the guys. Joe tells them they are nearly ready for Spike's exam and assures her that the baby will sleep through the tests. Kendall returns to Spike and watching her, Zach is overcome with emotion. In his mind he is pacing the halls, remembering all the ways he wronged Ethan and the way he failed Kendall - by not getting rid of Greenlee in the beginning. "End the curse," he tells himself, but he has no idea how to do that. The nurse returns, bringing Zach back to the present, and taking Spike away. Kendall follows them part way down the hall, wondering how she can fix things for Spike. She begins to freak out, yelling for Zach to take her and the boys away from there. Zach goes to Kendall and brings her back to the present. Ryan signs a few consent forms, thinking about Greenlee and how different she was from the moment she came back. In his mind, he is confronting her and asking for answers. He doesn't get any but swears that he will get a confession from her. Standing alone, Annie wonders how anyone could not love Spike. She talks to herself, remembering the early days of being together with Ryan. "I don't belong with them and I'm afraid they're going to find out," she says, afraid that once they learn her secret Ryan, Kendall and the others will turn on her the way they turned on Greenlee! Josh arrives, bringing the entire crew coffee and asking for an update on Spike. Annie tries to distract Ryan, reminding him of the card tricks he taught her. Ryan leaves to get something more to drink.
Joe returns to the group, telling them that Spike came through the MRI with flying colors but asking them not to visit him for a while yet. They want him to come fully out of the anesthesia before then. Annie and Kendall hug at the good news. Down the hall Ryan swears he will get Greenlee to admit what she has done - not because it will change things but because he wants to know! Jonathan arrives and gives Annie a photo album from the house. As she looks through the pictures Annie swears to never let them down the way her family let her down. Jonathan suggests a card game to take their minds off things but Jack declines. He begins to pace the halls, struggling with his feelings for Greenlee, his love for Erica and Kendall. He has no idea where to turn. Kendall returns from Spike's room. She draws a blanket from the bed and a three-heart bracelet falls out. "Nooooo," she cries and falls to the floor in grief.
The card game doesn't last long as no one can concentrate on anything other than Spike's future. All of them realize they are afraid - for Spike and for themselves. Joe returns.
