Spike Is Deaf!

A nurse comes running into Spike's room to see what the commotion is. Zach tells her he didn't react when the tray fell and she goes to find Joe. Ryan and Annie come in as Kendall tries to get some kind of reaction from the baby but he doesn't pay any attention. Greenlee sneaks out the door. Joe arrives and asks everyone to leave the room. Kendall refuses to go. Zach tries to convince Kendall that the baby will be find with the doctors but she refuses, thinking Greenlee did something to him while she was there alone. The doctors come back in and allow them to stay as long as they stay out of the way. As the doctors work, Annie comes in to stay with Kendall and Zach leaves.

Joe takes them all outside to give them his prognosis. They don't know why but Spike isn't responding to them at all. They need more tests to determine exactly what is wrong. Ryan asks about the worst case scenario. Joe assures them that Spike isn't in critical danger and that the problem, while probably not minor, also probably won't cause the boy any more harm. He promises them they will find out and the doctors return inside, shutting out Kendall, Ryan, Zach and Annie. Greenlee listens from down the hall. Sitting down, Kendall wonders how much more Spike can take. "He'll pull through," Zach says. Ryan watches as Greens limps away. Kendall and Zach return inside to sit with Spike. Annie comes in and Zach returns outside with Ryan. He asks if Greenlee has finally gone and Ryan wonders why Greens keeps showing up. Zach tells Ryan he is going to take care of her! Ryan asks about Ian and Zach updates him. Joe returns. He tells them that Spike won't die because of the problems, but that there is a problem - Spike is deaf!

Kendall vs. Greenlee

In the hospital, Ryan is talking to Spike while the boy drinks but he doesn't notice that Spike isn't really paying attention to him. Joe walks in, telling Ryan that they can't take Spike home just yet. Ryan panics but Joe calms him, saying they just need to observe Spike for a while longer. Joe suggests a week longer in the hospital. Annie arrives and Joe enlists her help to get Ryan home so he can rest. Joe leaves. Annie takes Ryan to the window where he watches Emma, holding up an "I love you" sign. They take him away for a picnic in a private room. Emma asks when she can go see Spike. They explain he is still too sick to see her; she asks how he got sick and asks if Spike is going to go to heaven like Kathy's mom did. They tell her Spike wants to stay with her and he'll be coming home soon. Annie packs up the picnic and they all prepare to leave.

A New Day

Annie visits Zach in the NICU with Ian. As they talk about Ian, how he came through the surgery, Zach becomes a bit more stable about his son. Annie begins talking, telling Zach about a new book she's had an idea for - with Ian as the main character. He loves the idea and hugs her tightly. Kendall arrives to see the baby and worries because he is holding Annie. He calms her, telling her things are fine. Relieved she tells him that Spike woke up. Annie runs out to see Ryan. Zach and Kendall watch Ian for a few moments. She tells Zach to go see Spike and she'll stay with Ian. Reluctantly he agrees to go. Alone with the baby, Kendall reaches out to touch his tiny hand and introduce herself officially. "You are a gift," she says, wishing she could hold him close. "Mommy's here." She tells him about Spike and how great they will be as brothers. She tells him about Zach and his ability to win arguments without getting loud. Kendall talks about Josh and Bianca and Erica, all charter members of the newly formed Ian fan club. Emotionally, Kendall apologizes for letting Ian down by not being able to stop the labor. "I swear to you I will put you in my arms where you belong," she says.

A nurse comes in to check Spike's vital signs and Ryan leaves. In the hall, he finally breaks down in tears. Annie walks by, sees him and goes to him, holding him as he cries. Jonathan returns from a phone call, asking about Spike. Ryan is interrupted with a business call, leaving Annie and Jonathan to talk. He thanks her for sticking by his brother and their family. "He's found peace with you," Jonathan assures her. Annie bursts out in tears. She pulls herself together, blaming her tears on finally seeing Ryan breakdown. She tells him she is never going let anyone come between them; from now on she will fight for her man and her family! Jonathan calls Ava and then leaves the hospital in a hurry.

Standing over Spike's crib, Zach thinks about all they have been through. Ryan comes in. He thanks Zach for insisting that Kendall's wishes be followed when she was pregnant and tells him that he will return the favor, in any way he can, for Ian. The two men hug. Annie comes in and Zach leaves to bring Kendall back. When they return to Spike's room Kendall tells them that Ian is already gaining weight and his lungs are functioning much better. Annie hugs her.

The Babies Are Okay!

Zach is waiting outside the surgery for news of the new baby when Annie and Emma arrive. Emma invites Zach to come swimming with him. Annie settles Emma down with some colors and she and Zach begin talking. Seeing that he is near the end of his rope, Annie compares losing Emma to what Zach is going through now. She tells him to keep planning the baby's life, to keep imagining how their lives will change. Zach isn't sure he can do it. Emma finishes her picture and gives it to Spike. Annie gathers their things and takes Emma to the beach for the day. The surgeon walks up to Zach.

Annie and Emma arrive for an afternoon of swimming at the yacht club. Ryan arrives and begins playing with Emma.

Zach Can't Hold It Together

Kendall and Zach see Greenlee in Spike's room and order her to leave. With tears in her eyes she hobbles away. Greenlee stops at the information desk. Josh is there. He suggests she go back to her hospital room but Greenlee only wants to go home. Josh can't believe it and asks how she'll get home and who will take care of her there. Greenlee continues down the hall but Josh stops her, offering to take her home and stay with her for a while. Reluctantly Greenlee agrees with his plan. They arrive at Greenlee's penthouse a few minutes later. Josh asks her about the pain prescription but Greenlee tells him she can deal with the pain on her own. Before he leaves Greenlee asks him for a favor - to keep her updated on Spike's condition. Josh doesn't like the idea at all but can't turn her down. "I guess so," he says and leaves her alone. Jack arrives a while later with no news about Spike. He stays with Greenlee, trying to offer her a little comfort. After a while he leaves and Greenlee is alone again. Alone in her apartment, Greenlee sits beside the window, staring out at the city.

Back in Spike's room Ryan, Annie and Zach help Kendall move from the wheelchair to a chair beside Spike's crib. "Why is he so quiet?" she asks. Ryan and Zach reassure Kendall, telling her the doctors are keeping him sedated so he can recover more quickly. Kendall beats herself up because she couldn't be with him during the night. Zach holds her and Ryan assures Kendall that Spike is going to be fine. Ryan tells her about the infection Spike is fighting, explaining that that is why the doctors have him so sedated. Kendall gets mad when, for about the fifth time, Ryan tells her Spike is fine. She doesn't believe he is fine - if he was fine he would be at home not lying in a hospital bed! She begins talking to Spike. Annie asks Zach about the new baby. A nurse arrives and tells Kendall and Zach that they need to go to the NICU right now! Zach helps Kendall back into the wheelchair and takes her to the other room. Annie hugs Ryan and begins to pray. As Ryan continues his vigil beside Spike's bed, Annie sits with them both. After a while, she tells Ryan she needs to go pick up Emma. They kiss goodbye and Annie leaves. Ryan stays beside Spike, talking to him about the future. He tells Spike about making model rockets and learning to water ski. "And I can't wait to play catch with you," Ryan says. Spike doesn't move at all.
