Ryan returns home and calls for Annie and Emma. They walk in the door behind him. Relieved, Ryan scoops Emma up in a hug. They were out getting groceries for dinner. He tells them about finding Spike. Ryan asks about the phones but Annie doesn't give him an answer. Instead she suggests that once Spike is released from PVH that they all take off for a nice, long vacation out of town! Putting the phone situation with the vacation request, Ryan wonders what is really going on with his wife. Annie is adamant that nothing is wrong but Ryan doesn't buy it. Annie gives him the new phone numbers. "Is this about the brother?" Ryan asks. Emma interrupts them before Annie has to answer. She returns from tucking in Emma and returns to dinner preparations but Ryan won't let the subject drop. He wants to know if Terry's brother is behind the calls. Annie tells him it can't be Terry's brother but won't tell him who she thinks it is. Instead she goes back through all the tumult of the past few months, trying to blame a panic attack and overreaction on the phone situation. Ryan decides to believe her. Annie asks him about Kendall's mystery doctor visit and Ryan fills her in about Dr. Hilliard and about Ian's latest setback. Annie can't believe it; Ryan doesn't want to talk about the hospital. Instead, he pulls Annie to him and kisses her passionately. They make love. Later, Annie wakes, hearing the nursery rhyme in her head.
Annie is frozen in fear as she listens to "Ring Around the Rosie" coming from the phone. Slowly she picks it up and asks why the person is calling. No one answers and she quickly hangs up. Seeing a picture of Emma she calls the day camp to arrange for an early pick up. But Emma isn't there! Annie becomes really worried when the woman tells her that some man, claiming to be Emma's uncle picked her up. She hangs up when someone knocks on the door. It's Jonathan, bringing Emma back. She freaks out on him but Jonathan calms her down, reminding her of Emma's dentist appointment. Realizing that Annie is very overwrought, Jonathan asks what is going on. Annie tries to cover but Jonathan doesn't buy her explanation and tries to get her to call Ryan. Annie refuses, saying she knows it was crazy but she just got worried because of what happened with Spike and Ian. Jonathan asks, again, what is really happening. He wonders why her immediate response was to call 9-1-1 instead of Ryan or Rachel or even him but Annie blows off his concern. The phone rings and Annie hesitates to answer it; Jonathan moves toward the phone. Annie orders him not to answer it!
Ryan and Tad meet in Kendall's room and begin going through her things to find out where Kendall may have gone. Tad tells Ryan to calm down because the doctor is probably really trying to help but Ryan still worries that there could be problems because Kendall hasn't been sleeping. Tad gets a guy at the phone company to trace all of her calls but that isn't enough for Ryan - he wants to find Kendall now before anything else happens to Spike. Tad tries to calm him down, reminding Ryan that Kendall loves Spike and she wouldn't do anything to hurt him. Ryan calls Annie but can't make sense of anything she says. He asks her to think about any other doctors Kendall may have seen but she doesn't know. Ryan hangs up and learns that Kendall may have seen a Dr. Hilliard. Ryan takes off to find them.
Annie hangs up from talking to Ryan, more worried than ever. Jonathan goes to help Emma with cookies and she makes a call. She learns that whoever she was calling for hasn't left wherever they are as Jonathan and Emma return with a plate of cookies. He takes and few and leaves; Annie locks up behind him. She picks up Emma, holding her close because she is still worried about the weird calls.
Talking at home, Ryan tells Annie that he wants to know more about her. Annie isn't ready to talk about her past, which makes Ryan even more curious about her family. "I want to know you, all of you," he says. Still, Annie doesn't want to revisit the past with Ryan. He accepts her answer but tells her when she is ready, she can tell him anything. As they eat lunch, Annie tells Ryan a little about her father. His name is Walter Novak, he is serious and he became deaf after an accident. Ryan asks about the accident but Annie won't give him any details. He changes the subject to talk about Walter's job - he was a music teacher before the accident; since he lost his hearing, though, he has become a painter. "Didn't he miss what he lost?" Ryan asks. Annie tries to explain by explaining that the senses are really tied to feelings, so Spike can still feel everything even if he can't hear anything. Ryan leaves for the hospital. Annie is cleaning up from lunch when the phone rings. No one will talk to her, instead a nursery rhyme begins to play. Annie throws the phone to the floor, scared.
Annie returns to Pine Valley and an angry Ryan demands to know where she has been. Annie tries to dance around the subject but Ryan won't let it drop; when she still won't come clean, Ryan realizes wherever she went wasn't only for Spike. He asks her to trust him but Annie doesn't want to burden him with her family problems when there is so much going on with Spike and Kendall. Reluctantly, though, she tells Ryan that the deaf person she knows is her father. She tells him about the visit, and that her father has refused to help her or them. Ryan wonders why but Annie isn't ready to talk about that just yet. Ryan pushes the issue. She does tell Ryan that her mother died suddenly and her father hasn't been able to get past that. She apologizes that her father isn't willing to help Spike and then tells Ryan about visiting her mother's grave and begins to cry. Ryan takes her in his arms. Annie continues packing up Spike's ICU bed. Ryan asks her to teach him a little bit of sign language so he can begin talking to Spike again. Annie agrees. They sit down and Annie tells him signing is as much about body language as it is about the actual motions. Then, she shows him the alphabet in sign. Ryan asks her to skip ahead and show him how to say "I love you" in sign. Annie shows him the motions and they begin signing to each other. Annie kisses him.
Annie arrives at an apartment. She pushes the doorbell and a light begins to flash. "Hi, Dad," she says when a man opens the door. She goes inside but her father won't even look at her. Annie walks in front of him so he doesn't have a choice but to look at her. He begins to speak in sign language but goes too fast for her. Finally, he speaks a little. "After what you did, how can I even look at you again?" he asks. She apologizes for contacting him and then goes on to tell him about spike and asks him to help her help the boy and his family. Annie sees a shell and picks it up. Her father demands she put it down and leave. Before she goes, Annie asks him for the name of the woman who helped him when he lost his hearing. He calls her a hypocrite and orders her to leave! Annie won't leave, though. She tells him what she remembers of the woman, called Elizabeth, and then tells him about Spike and Ryan and the rest of her family. Her father relents and gives her an address. Annie keeps talking to him but he turns to his paints. Annie makes his look at her lips so he'll understand, gives him a picture of Emma - whom she named for her mother! - and then turns to leave. At the door she turns, gets his attention and apologizes for whatever happened in the past. He turns away from her. She leaves the apartment. After she has gone, Annie's father picks up the picture of Emma. Annie follows her father's directions to a cemetery and her mother's grave! She sinks to her knees and begins to cry.
At Fusion, Annie tries to focus on work rather than the drama in her personal life but quickly thoughts of Spike and Ian take over. Di tells her not to worry about work, to let the others do that, and instead go back to her family. But Annie can't. She feels like she needs to act, to do something. Her phone rings, interrupting them, but it is a wrong number and she is disappointed. Di wonders who she hoped that call would be from. "I called him. I had to, for Spike," she says, shocking Di who obviously knows what Annie is taking about. She tells Di she didn't want to call "him" but didn't feel she had a choice because she needed to help Ryan! Di tells Annie that she needs to tell Ryan everything but Annie doesn't feel like she can yet. Instead, she tells Di that she needs to go! Di leaves. As soon as she is alone Annie calls the airlines to make a last minute reservation.
After running all of the tests, the doctors tell the Slater and Lavery families that Spike is indeed profoundly deaf and it can't be fixed. Neither Ryan nor Kendall want to believe it. The doctors tell them with an implant Spike may be able to hear at some point in the future. When she learns that the implant cannot be done immediately, Kendall demands that Spike be taken somewhere else right away. Erica, Josh and Zach try to calm her down but she tells them that Spike needs a cure right now - not sometime down the road. Zach holds Kendall and tells her that moving Spike now could hurt him even more. Jonathan asks Ryan what he can do to fix this mess but Ryan doesn't have any answers. Annie goes to him, too, telling him that things will work out. Jack distracts Erica, asking her to come with him to decompress for a little while. Erica doesn't want to leave but he eventually convinces her to go with him. Josh goes to the hall and makes a call, he leaves an angry message, telling the person to call him back right away.
Annie and Ryan talk about cochlear implants, wondering if this is the right thing to do. Annie likes the idea, especially because both doctors feel it is the right way to do. Ryan is too angry to make a decision; he actually lashes out at her, hurting her feelings. Ryan apologizes. They return to Spike's hospital room, meeting Kendall, Zach and Joe inside. All of them stand by the little boy, wondering what they can do to fix him. Joe tells them all to leave and get some rest but Kendall refuses to even sit down. She is afraid that if she isn't there something else, something worse, will happen. Joe leaves. Jonathan watches the family from outside with no idea how to help but needing to all the same. Inside, Kendall is holding Spike and feeling better about things as the little boy drinks a bottle. Zach leaves to get coffee. In the hall, he asks Jonathan to come with but Jonathan declines. Zach leaves.
