New Developments

Kendall takes Spike home and finds Ryan waiting there. She tells him there is nothing new on the Zach front but says Aidan is still looking for them both. Ryan is watching her compassionately and Kendall tells him to stop treating her like a widow! Ryan suggests they have some dinner and Kendall tells him Josh and Erica will be home soon; she suggests he invite Annie and Emma, too. Ryan calls in their order for Chinese food. To get her mind off of Zach Kendall asks about Annie. Ryan updates her on the Richie situation. Spike begins crying in the nursery and Kendall listens through the monitor. Kendall tells Ryan about her promise to confess about setting up Greenlee and how she didn't keep the promise. They talk for a bit about Greenlee - the past and the present. Ryan blames himself, saying if he hadn't left and faked his death none of this would have happened. Kendall tells him it wasn't his fault any more than it was Zach's fault or her own. Kendall tries to call Aidan for an update but he doesn't answer. Just then Joe stops by and tells them that there is news about Spike's deafness - Joe says the cause of Spike's hearing loss may not have been the result of the accident. Joe says Spike had a chromosomal abnormality that caused Spike to lose his hearing and it was coincidence that the abnormality manifested itself at the time of the accident.

Confessions 'R Us!

Down the hall, Annie calls Corrinna to check on Emma. Babe walks up and Annie tells her about having Richie committed. Babe can't believe it and asks what lies Annie told; Annie insists that she told the truth only. Babe doesn't believe her and tells Annie that she won't be manipulated by them! Annie tells Babe about Richie's plan to have her kill him. Babe refuses to believe Annie and leaves. Annie returns to Ryan and Kendall just as Joe arrives. He tells them that Spike will be transferred to his private room soon and that things look good for the little guy. Joe shows them in to Spike's room and the adults encourage him to be strong. After a while Ryan leaves to spread the word about Spike but Kendall stays with him.

Providing An Alibi

Kendall arrives at the hospital with Spike. Ryan and Annie meet her and so does Erica. Erica has ordered them all lunch and reserved an area just for their family to wait for news of Spike's surgery. Joe walks in and Erica becomes uncomfortable; he focuses on Spike and Kendall, promising her that Spike will be right as rain in just a few hours. Ryan takes Spike off for a little daddy-talk. As the women become teary, Ryan promises Spike that he will hear again. Kendall kisses Spike one more time before Joe takes him off to surgery. Joe returns a while later. He shows them the implant and explains about the surgery and then leaves. Kendall becomes very worried that she may have made a mistake in going forward with the surgery. Both Annie and Erica tell her she is doing the right thing. Ryan tries to calm her down but Kendall freaks out about Spike and about Zach. Josh walks up with Zach's favorite hockey sweater. They sit down and Josh assures Kendall that Zach will be back fighting for both of her boys before long; Kendall isn't so sure. She worries when the nurses don't come in to give her an update on the surgery but Josh calms her down. Ryan and Annie return with coffee and apologize to Kendall for being so wrapped up in their own problems and not helping her. Kendall says it doesn't matter because they are all together now. Erica returns and Jack walks in the waiting room. Erica is surprised to see him and asks how things are. Julia arrives and they begin chatting about Lily. Erica is surprised to learn about Lily's meltdown and asks why Jack didn't call her. He says it never occurred to him that she would care; that hurts Erica. Kendall begins telling everyone about her newfound working relationship with Aidan. Across the room, Jonathan confronts Ava about her meetings with JR at the jail lately. He asks if she is seeing JR now! Before she can answer Joe comes in with news about Spike. He says Spike came through the surgery with flying colors but asks them to wait a few more minutes before disturbing the kiddo. Joe tells them in a few weeks they will turn the implant on and then they will know if Spike will hear again. The good news gives Kendall hope for Zach, too.

Being Committed...

Richie is reading through the information that Ryan tossed on his bed. He points out that he is dying and therefore Ryan's hypothesis doesn't make sense. Ryan brings up Stan, the insurance salesman, and points out that they policy doesn't pay if Richie dies of natural causes but if Richie is killed, it pays a million dollars - to Richie's prison psychiatrist! Richie swears Ryan is reading the policy wrong but Ryan doesn't believe him for a second. He tells Richie that he will be watching for as long as Richie lives. Richie thinks he still has the upper-hand and makes a few inferences about Annie being on the edge. He tells Ryan that he can't stop what will happen because Richie knows exactly how to manipulate his sister! Ryan leaves the hospital room. Across the hall he sees Joe and asks for help. Ryan tells Joe that Richie needs another psychological evaluation. Joe agrees to listen to Ryan's plan.

Agreeing to help Ryan, Jo manages to convince Richie that he needs another psychiatric evaluation to make sure things are fine. Richie agrees. Joe instructs the orderlies to take Richie to the psych ward - where Janet is waiting!

At Kendall's, Josh arrives as Erica is making demands on a toy company. A delivery man arrives with boxes filled with toys. She tells Josh that she is trying to make certain that things will be perfect for Kendall and Zach; Josh asks what he is doing with her own life. Kendall calls and afterward Josh asks what is really going on with Erica. Instead of talking about her own problems, Erica calls Pam and postpones several episode tapings, telling Pam that she has to be available for anything that Kendall may need. As she dials a few more numbers Josh tells her that he is moving in until Zach returns home. Erica more or less ignores him. Pam calls back and begins going over a few show details with Erica. When Erica finally hangs up the phone Josh cuts right to the chase and brings up Jack but before Erica can say anything Joe Martin interrupts them. Erica sees him and says he is not welcome in her home! Erica sends Josh away (apparently not caring that she is actually in Kendall's home) and tells Joe that he is not welcome anywhere near her or her family because of the way he is trying to break up she and Jack. Joe points out that he isn't the one who was lying to Jack and says in any case he is there to see Kendall, not Erica. Erica tosses him out! Josh returns and tells her he know exactly how she feels! Erica tells him about her plans for Greenlee. Josh tells her that even Kane's can be wrong and says she has to be the first to apologize to Jack. Erica says she can't because she truly believes Greenlee needs psychiatric help. Josh reminds Erica that when he was in a similar place, she gave him exactly the same advice. She still doesn't think she can do it. Kendall arrives home a few minutes later.

Manipulations and Lies

At the hospital Babe checks in with Dr. Joe to see how Richie is doing. Joe reports that things are going well and encourages Babe to go inside. She doesn't want to. Richie overhears them talking and, to get Babe into the room, climbs out of bed and then crashes to the floor. Babe and Joe come running in. Two orderlies manage to put Richie back to bed. He is satisfied with his progress. He apologizes and tells them he wanted some water. Babe and Joe tell him that he needs to call nurses for things like that because he isn't well enough to be on his own. Joe tells them that Richie won't be on his own for quite a while and leaves. Babe brings up in-home nursing and asks Richie if Walter could help him. Richie says Walter can't but tells her he'll be fine on his own. Then, he tells her to get on with her life. "I've distracted you enough," he says. Babe sits with him for a while. Richie manages to pull up some tears and tells Babe he is afraid of being alone and he is sorry that he pulled her into his mess of a life. Babe hugs him, upset that Richie won't have anyone to care for him. Richie insists he'll be fine alone and tells her to go. Crying Babe leaves. Once he is alone, Richie smirks. He stands up, picks up a piece of clothing and returns to bed certain that his plan is coming together.

Zach's Delusional!

Inside Richie's hospital room, Annie opens the vial. Richie dares her to give him the drug so he can die. Annie holds the vial out but won't let Richie take it; instead she dumps it down the sink and throws out the bottle. She turns on Richie and asks him how he could do this to her. Ryan and Babe come in, asking what happened. Annie tells them that Richie just asked her to kill him! Babe thinks this is just about trick. Annie tells Ryan about the vial and he digs it out of the trash. Babe asks Richie what is going on but he won't say anything. Joe walks in as they argue, telling them all to leave so Richie can get some rest. Ryan tells Joe what happened, hands Joe the vial and asks him to have the contents tested. Richie says he can't talk about it when Joe asks if Ryan is telling the truth. Joe asks everyone to leave but Richie asks if Babe can stay. Joe allows it. He asks Richie if he really asked Annie to kill him and says he has to call in a psychologist to talk to him because of hospital regulations. Babe offers to stay until the psychologist arrives. Joe leaves. Babe turns on Richie and calls him a coward! He tells her he is just in too much pain. Richie asks if he can hold her and Babe moves into his arms. Joe returns with the psychologist and Babe leaves.

Babe returns inside Richie's room as the doctors leave and tells Richie that she has to help JR with something. She tells Richie about JR's possible involvement in the hit-and-run and Richie pretends not to know anything. He tells her he'll be fine and to go. When she is gone, he remembers pulling the picture of them from the glove compartment and then hitting Zach, putting him in the car and pushing him out!

Joe brings Richie's test results to Ryan and Annie, telling them that Richie may not survive the night! He promises the doctors will do whatever they can. Annie turns back to Richie's room and watches him sleep. "I want to want to go in there and tell Richie it's going to be okay," she says as Ryan holds her.
