I would like to see real deaf people on AMC show and see them in hearing aids instead of cochlear implants----and it should be real deaf ones not a hearing person playing like he deaf....

The actor who'll play Annie's father is hearing impaired. He speaks and signs

This might be a little bit into a spoiler...

This storyline is going to go all the way ...you will see soon...You should be pleased with what they do.

I do believe the actor playing Annie's Dad is really deaf. Unfortunately a large number of deaf people do not benefit from hearing aides. When I worked in surgery we explained procedures in the hall (once the mask went on they couldn't lip read) It was amazing how well some lip read!

I heard they were having more deaf people on and at least one child with an implant (DePaiva's son). You are right, aids do not work for all deaf people. My son got absolutely no benefit from his so he has an implant.

I'll be pleased if they don't find some "miracle cure" and they keep Spike deaf. I want to see this character develop as a real deaf person would and show the hurdles and challenges a real family faces when faced with something like this. I don't want a typical soap opera miracle.

At the very best lip readers can understand about 60% of what someone is saying. You're not only using your lips to talk..but you're whole body. And there are a lot of lip formations that look similar...but could have very different meanings. So, lip reading really isn't an ideal solution.

I really like how they are using sign, but just saying that lip reading is the answer.....doesn't really cut it. What would be cool is if they actually did sign, and then had subtitles or something like that.

I don't want a miracle for Spike either. It seems like the way they are hinting about, Spike is going to eventually end up getting cochlear implants. Which I guess, would be a realistic decision for parents who are hearing.

The actor playing Annie's father is Deaf... He has had many years of voice training, and is one of the fortunate ones that is skilled at reading lips.

A friend of mine was hearing impaired and she could read lips well and speak with no problem. Thinking back now ... I never signed to her. She wore a hearing aid but mostly only relied on it during work settings since it was much noisier.

Deaf means, no ability, what so ever to hear
If what you mean, is 'hard of hearing', I personally, am an 'expert', on this subject! I read lips, have no hearing aide, OR 'coclear implant'. and do just fine, thank you very much!!!! This all happened to me, because I was a professional musician

From my understanding just as in being "Legally Blind" there are degrees of what is considered to be "Legally Deaf" as well. This is from info that a good friend of mine who's an ENT Doc.
