Born in Sacramento, California, James Mitchell fell in love with the theater at an early age. James, an accomplished and talented dancer played a number of leading roles in Broadway musicals. He also appeared with the American Ballet Theater in New York and traveled with the Agnes DeMille Dance Theater throughout Europe, South America and the United States.
In the movie musical, Mr. Mitchell portrayed the artistic director in Turning Point; The Bandwagon starring Fred Astaire and Deep in My Heart with Cyd Charisse. During the 1966 Academy Awards Special, Mr. Mitchell danced with Miss Charisse.
From 1969 to 1973, he played the role of Professor Hathaway on the daytime series, Where the Heart Is. Mr. Mitchell also appeared in the ABC Television Network's primetime series, Charlie's Angels.
James has taught movement for actors to theater arts students, which he describes as "an exchange of the disciplines of dancing and acting." He has taught at Yale University and at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in fine arts.
